GIS Day Celebration 2022

GIS is a scientific framework for gathering, analyzing, and visualizing geographic data to help us make better decisions. On GIS Day, help others learn about geography and the real-world applications of GIS that are making a difference in our society.

This year, the Institute of Archaeology and Heritage Studies plans to online demonstrate the Sri Lanka National Shipwreck Database.

Sri Lanka National Shipwreck Database

The National Database for shipwreck sites in Sri Lanka is an online database that provides a unique experience to shipwreck lovers worldwide. It helps to learn about the heritage (historical and archaeological) details of known shipwrecks in Sri Lankan waters by preserving them in digital format for the future generation. These heritage details were presented using different multimedia formats attractively and interactively.

GIS Day Sri Lanka National Shipwreck Database

Each wreck site plays a crucial part in many ways. Heritage value is only one aspect. Wrecks make artificial reefs/ breading grounds for marine life and to develop marine biodiversity. Wrecks attract many visitors (divers, snorkelers, and researchers), contributing to the tourism industry. Because of these multiple functions, many government and non-government institutes and research institutes need data related to the wrecks.

This Database contains reliable and accurate data gathered by the Maritime Archaeology Unit of the Central Cultural Fund. After composing the basic structure, more data were extracted from Professional divers, the Sri Lanka Navy, and the Department of Archaeology. The Database is being updated with research and scientific data from related local and international institutes. Other than the heritage details, the newest feature is the biodiversity details of each wreck.

In this GIS day demonstration, we will present how we used GIS to present the information to the users using different online maps and interactive dashboards in Sri Lanka National Shipwreck Database. This presentation will be done in the Sinhala language.

Rasika Muthucumarana and Anuradha Piyadasa will do this demonstration.
